It’s hard to love once, harder still to love twice
Feels like the ground freezes as you kneel to gather your heart
Like the sun is out but you’re covered in ice
Broken pieces just never heal right…
Some say in time all wounds mend
But time is scarce beneath the stars
Life is short, let’s not pretend...
And Tuesday’s wounds are Wednesday’s scars
And even if the scars are few
Even if the icecaps melt
Even still if you start anew
There’s no running from what you felt…
So where do you go to escape your thoughts?
To find that peace that you desperately need
What do you do when you’ve reopened your cuts?
What do I do? I watch myself bleed…
Alternate endings:
I say a creed
I smoke some weed…
I write a screed…

This is very beautiful and touching...and if you are writing from experience. have hope!
ReplyDeleteParticularly, i love the 2nd and 3rd stanzas. Line 8 is so much on point. Great work!
ReplyDeleteOn the negative side, I wish the poet left out the last stanza. The poem seems (to me) to be much better without it.
Its not a last stanza - alternate endings I was toying with. Thanks for the feedback though
ReplyDeletehhhmm
ReplyDeletevery beautiful...its giving me inspiration
ReplyDeleteI found the alternate ending, "I smoke some weed" amusing....It's a nice piece!!
ReplyDeletethat last line is extremely deep and emotional. To watch yourself bleed is like you've given up all (eg hope) and make no attempt to make ammends. The other endings you toyed with do not do as much justice or have the samee impact.
ReplyDeleteWell done is expressing this.
